At the TEDSummit, there were many activities of discovering new ideas and countless opportunities of getting connected to passionate global souls.
For some tricky reasons, I missed my flight to Edinburgh but TED team thankfully reschedule another flight so I could join the Summit.
Arrival at Edinburgh
I arrived in Edinburgh one day later than other translators but I could get along with old and new friends from across the world. All TED buddies are super nice and friendly and open to all possibilities. I cannot fully express how much I learned and was moved by their generosity.
The schedule was quite packed with a lot of events and activities. I chose mostly indoor activities and tried to relax as much as I could.
In the sessions, I listened to famous TED style talks and enjoyed performances. And discovery sessions provided all unique and different experiences where TED speakers and staff hosted.
Pay tribute to Won Jang, co-LC
At the last session, there was time for anyone to come forward and share opinions and ideas. I stepped in and shared the tragic news of Korean community. One of our dear LCs(Language Coordinator), Won Jang, passed away unexpectedly at age 30. He was supposed to be at the Summit together but a serious heart condition was found. He was admitted to a hospital in Seoul just two weeks before the summit. We talked on the phone and exchanged text messages together encouraging each other. I felt so sorry for him that he couldn't come to the Summit at that time. But I became more worried about his health. I phoned him just hours before his death, which we didn't know it could have been the last call. We talked so cheerfully with the brightest smiles and laugh. When I heard his death, I wept and wept and wept....
I had to let TED community know about his contribution and passion. I stepped forward and shared....for a minute. Of course I choked up but managed to continue.
"Hello, I'm Jihyeon, a Korean TED translator. I'm here to pay tribute to one of my co-translators, Won Jang. He was supposed to be here with us. He was invited here. But he died last Monday unexpectedly. I believe his contribution and translation will live forever. Thank you very much."
It was a very brief tribute but everyone in the theater stood up and gave a big round of applause for long. I still can't believe I did it in front of global audience at TED.
TED has become a very important part of my life. Since I started translating TED talks in 2014, its impact on my personal and professional life is unfathomable. I'm sending unlimited gratitude to TED team and my collaborators. Thank you!
