This is a showcase of what I've done throughout the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) courses. I created homepages organizing information about literacy education, wrote essays on a literacy case study, a summary of language research articles, designed lesson plans with inquiry-based instruction, and the like. I've experienced the expanded view on literacy education and special education through the research and collaboration with the colleagues.

Essays ( 2012 - 2014)
(Summer 2012) TE 848 Writing Assessment and Instruction
- Inquiry on Effective Summarization Strategies for Secondary students This is a teaching exploration project incorporating research data and my own experience of writing instruction. In order to help English as a Second Language (ESL) learners understand reading texts and write a summary, I chose a topic related to summarization strategies for secondary students. To complete this project, I reviewed more than twenty research articles related to summarization skills and read a published handbook of summarization. This was the first and the hardest writing assignment for me because it was the second course of my Master of Arts in Education (MAED), which means I had no previous experience in writing graduate level paper. I went through many times of editing with help of peers and the instructor, Lisa Hawkins. Her supportive and practical feedback helped me a lot in improving and completing the project. Through this process, I have learned how to give effective feedback as well as structuring research paper. (Spring 2013) TE 846 accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners - Literacy Learner Analysis Project
This is a case study of accommodating struggling learners. I chose two high school ESL students who had similar reading habits but different out-of-school literacy practices. Pre-tests were conducted and compared with the result of post-tests later. This project allowed me to have a close interaction with the students who had difficulty in reading comprehension. Following the step-by-step guidelines of the project made it easy to gather relevant information and analyze what it means. (Summer 2013) CEP 840 Policies, Practices, and Perspectives in Special Education - Brochure about intellectual disability fast facts
This is a project of creating a fast facts sheet about learning disabilities. I chose intellectual disability as a topic and incorporated information and visual images. Making fast facts involves targeting key concepts, condensing core information, and arranging relevant ideas to potential audience. (Fall 2013) CEP 843 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Implications - Language research article
The purpose of the assignment is to explore practical methods of language intervention for children with autism by consulting peer-reviewed research paper. The course requires to summarize three research articles, and this is one of them. While searching for initial articles, I had to find out articles that contain specific language interventions especially for children with autism. I used the site The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) where collection of research articles can be found. It was extremely useful that I could zero in what I want to search for by typing in key words such as motivation and secondary reading. |
(Spring 2014) TE 843 Secondary Reading Assessment and Instruction - Final project creating a unit plan based on inquiry-based instruction
This is the final project of designing a unit plan based on the major concept of inquiry-based instruction. The project got me thinking about a new perspective of learning with inquiry. "Backward thinking" is an important step to completing a unit plan in order to ensure intended outcome from implementing it. From designing a single lesson plan to creating a unit plan, this project gave me an idea of how I can draw the whole picture of learning through backward thinking.

Digital Story & Presentation (2013 - 2014)
(Summer 2014) CEP 800 Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings :
This is a project of creating a digital story by incorporating pictures, sound clips into narration. It requires skills in editing video and sound clips. The process of creating this involves comprehensive presentation skills such as planning ahead, thinking of key concepts, considering the flow of story, and maximizing the effect of multimedia. I have learned three important things through digital storytelling. It gives learners an opportunity to reflect on what they learned, to explore different perspectives, and to reach wider audience by sharing. |
(Fall 2013) CEP 843 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Implications :
This is a presentation video of the summary of language research articles which include language interventions for children with autism. This assignment was to synthesize the three articles which had been reviewed previously. In this assignment I summarized the brief background of the three articles and added further interpretation. It was a challenging assignment for me, but through the process of reviewing and summarizing the articles, creating slide presentation and adding narration to the presentation, I have learned how to speak clearly and effectively. |
Slide Presentation (2013)(Fall 2013) CEP 804A Literacy Instruction for Students with Mild Disabilities :
This is a slide presentation about Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) that helps struggling readers to overcome learning difficulty. |
Audio Interview (2014)(Summer 2014) CEP 800 Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings :
This assignment is to explore the effect of presenting knowledge in combination with audio format. It requires incorporating high quality audio sound with transitive music to make it comfortable to audience. I interviewed 6th grade Korean student, asking how people become bilingual. He knows how people become bilingual in two different way, in infancy or in later life. It is uploaded in Soundcloud. |
